An effort to place rent control and eviction controls before Long Beach voters will soon enter the signature-gathering phase.
On Tuesday, the Long Beach city attorney gave petitioners the green light to begin collecting signatures for a measure titled the Long Beach Rent Control Ordinance.
The California Apartment Association’s offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 19, in observance of Presidents Day. Normal operating hours will resume Tuesday.

As you consider prospective renters in 2018, remember that your applicant screening fee can only cover the expenses you incur in the process.
This includes the actual money spent gathering information, as well as time spent by you or your staff. But no matter how much you pay for tenant screening, your fee to applicants may not exceed $49.12.

Answer: A landlord can be cited for maintaining a drug-related nuisance if he or she does not take reasonable steps to remove the illegal drug activity from the property. The local enforcement agency must first advise the landlord of the nuisance.

State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, has introduced a pair of bills to help boost housing production in California, a goal shared by the California Apartment Association.
Wiener’s SB 827 is intended to encourage multifamily development around public transportation hubs. The bill would lift some locally imposed low-density zoning standards that can prevent the construction of apartment buildings in these infill locations.
The legislation promises to address California’s ongoing housing shortage, and it would offer environmental benefits by boosting higher density housing near public transit, reducing the need for residents to commute by car.

Rent control activists in the city of Santa Cruz have filed paperwork to place a rent control measure before voters in the November election.
Rent control proponents filed their initiative with the Santa Cruz city clerk on Friday, Jan. 19, beginning the process of qualifying the measure. Within 15 days, the city attorney is expected to review the measure and issue an impartial summary and analysis.

The California Apartment Association has expanded its Southern California government affairs team to bring greater representation to rental housing providers in South Los Angeles County.
Earlier this month, CAA named Frederick Sutton as vice president of public affairs for Long Beach and more than 20 other municipalities in L.A. County.
Sutton, who started on Jan. 16, brings a wealth of experience representing rental housing providers.
