Fire inspection fees nearly quintuple in Moreno Valley

The California Apartment Association is asking Inland Empire members with properties in Moreno Valley to contact the city regarding its nearly five-fold increase in fire inspection fees.

The fees, now $36 per unit, marks a 450 percent increase and could leave some members paying more than $9,000 for fire inspections.

A couple of CAA members recently received notices of the higher fees and informed CAA. The fire inspection ordinance took effect in January.

“We immediately reached out to city officials, including the fire marshal, and engaged with them,” said Tim Johnson, executive director CAA’s Inland Empire Division, or CAA-AAGIE. “We’re still attempting to learn more about the changes to the fire inspections, including the scope of what they are inspecting both internally and externally when on-site.”

The city also now mandates annual fire inspections but has not informed CAA regarding the number of units per community that will be inspected.

We’re asking for your assistance,” Johnson writes in an email to members. “Please let the city of Moreno Valley know you have serious concerns regarding the new fire inspection fee ordinance.

“Your letters of concern to the city will be a strong show of support against the new inspection fee and aid our efforts to have the city look into amending it.”
