Help take a bite out of bed bug problems

The California Apartment Association is encouraging rental housing managers to participate in a survey to help fight bed bugs in multi-family housing.

CAA is collaborating with the University of California on the study, which includes an electronic survey that takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

With the survey results, researchers will develop best “integrated pest management” practices for confronting bed bugs in California’s apartment complexes.

UC researchers want to assess the impact bed bugs have on California’s housing industry while gathering information about bed bug management practices in the state’s multi-unit dwellings.

They hope to establish benchmarks and evaluate the needs and challenges faced by housing management, owners, tenants and others serving rental communities.

With the survey results, researchers will develop best “integrated pest management” practices for confronting bed bugs in California’s apartment complexes.

The study also will provide a snapshot of bed bug prevelance in rental housing statewide and should lead to reduced use of pesticides and related exposure.

In addition to rental property managers, pest management professionals and tenants are also completing surveys as part of the project.

The effort is led by the UC Urban Integreated Pest Management Programs with funding provided by University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
