California law requires owners of rental housing to disclose specific information to tenants about who owns the property, who is authorized to manage the property, and who is authorized to receive legal notices and service of process on behalf of the owner. These laws sometimes overlap with other legal requirements for certain businesses to appoint designated agents for service of process and to file fictitious business name statements. This paper will address common questions raised by owners of rental property related to the legal requirements for when and how a rental property owner must designate an agent for service of process.
