Every three years, California cities update their building and fire safety codes. The California Building Standards Commission adopted most of the rules from the International Fire Code. The rules included standards for the use of open flame cooking devices and barbecues at multifamily properties. The Commission, however, left to cities and counties the decision to adopt and enforce these grilling standards.
