A petition to put rent control on the November ballot in Santa Rosa has failed to qualify.
On Friday, the Santa Rosa city clerk announced that the petition fell short of the required number of valid signatures needed to place the measure on the Nov. 6 ballot.
To qualify the initiative, tenant advocates needed to submit 8,985 valid voter signatures. City officials, however, could confirm the validity of only 7,895, leading the city clerk to deem the petition insufficient.

Los Angeles County supervisors have pulled a temporary rent control ordinance from next week’s meeting agenda.
Supervisors had been scheduled to consider a moratorium on rent increases over 3 percent in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, however, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl had the item removed from Tuesday’s lineup.
Rather than enacting a rent freeze, the supervisor has decided to bring the proposal back to city staff and is expecting a report in the coming weeks.
The California Apartment Association has been mobilizing members to oppose the temporary rent cap.

At the request of Mayor Darrell Steinberg, the Sacramento City Council is expected to discuss tenant protections, such as rent control and tenancy-termination restrictions, as well as ways to increase funding and streamline the permitting process for construction of affordable housing. Although a rent control measure could be headed for the Nov. 6 ballot in Santa Rosa, a movement on the City Council is afoot to explore a rent control ordinance at City Hall as well.
On Tuesday, the council was scheduled to discuss a potential rent control ordinance, spurring members of the California Apartment Association to attend the meeting to voice their opposition.
The mayor ultimately pulled the item from the agenda, and it is unclear whether the council will revisit it.

Rent control proponents announced this week that they have suspended their signature-gathering campaign in Long Beach.
Housing Long Beach, the group that was collecting signatures, initially attempted to qualify its rent control measure for the Nov. 6 ballot, but it missed its June 1 deadline to submit more than the 27,000 signatures required to qualify.

Time has run out for signature gatherers to qualify a rent control initiative for the November 2018 ballot in the city of Sacramento.
However, the Housing 4 Sacramento coalition, which includes the Alliance for Californians for Community Engagement and Service Employees International Union, continues to collect signatures with hopes of meeting the Sept. 4 deadline to qualify the charter amendment for the next general election, which comes in 2020.

An initiative that would bring rent control to National City, a municipality in San Diego County, has qualified for November’s ballot.
The San Diego County Registrar of Voters confirmed this week that the National City Rent Control and Community Stabilization Ordinance (accessible here) will be officially slated for November’s ballot. The push for rent control in National City is being driven by the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.

Tenant activists in the city of Santa Rosa have filed signatures in hopes of qualifying what would become the city’s second rent control measure in less than two years.
Last week, the North Bay Organizing Project submitted 11,565 signatures on their petition to qualify a rent control and “just cause” eviction measure for the city’s Nov. 6 ballot.
That submission kicked off a 30-day review period for the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters to verify at least 8,985 of the signatures are valid to qualify the initiative.

Santa Cruz County election officials confirmed Thursday that the Movement for Housing Justice had filed the necessary 5,661 valid voter signatures to place the measure before voters.
The California Apartment Association is fully engaged in a campaign to defeat the measure, which would go further than existing rent control ordinances in Berkeley, San Francisco and Oakland. In the event that Costa-Hawkins is repealed, the measure is likely to apply rent control to single-family homes.

A rent control measure targeted for Inglewood’s fall ballot has failed to qualify, the city clerk’s office has confirmed.
Tenant advocates filed their petition for a rent control measure in October 2017, giving them six months to submit the approximately 10,000 valid voter signatures needed to qualify their measure.
In May, proponents submitted 14,000 signatures, however, the city clerk reports that an excessive number of those signatures were invalid, disqualifying the Inglewood Rent Control Petition for the fall ballot.
