This year’s CAA Greater East Bay GEMM Awards attracted a record-breaking 510 attendees.
CAA Contra Costa Napa Solano and RHA Serving Southern Alameda County held the 13th annual celebration Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville.
The event honored the industry’s elite individuals and properties in 17 categories. Judges picked from nearly 300 nominees.

The California Apartment Association urges its members to attend a workshop on rent control next week in Concord.
The city of Concord is presenting this public event, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle.
The workshop will include a panel discussion on rent control for elected officials, city staff and the community.
Speakers will provide an overview of rental conditions within Concord, as well as the greater Bay Area.

The California Apartment Association is preparing to fight a rent control and just-cause eviction measure that qualified this week for the November ballot in Richmond.
The Contra Costa County Registrar of Voters on Tuesday, July 12, certified that rent control proponents collected a sufficient number of valid signatures to place the measure before voters in the general election.
The measure includes rent control based on the consumer price index, as well as a just-cause-for-eviction provision.

Beginning June 1, 2016, rental agreements for properties with wood-burning heaters or fireplaces throughout the San Francisco Bay Area must include a document describing the health hazards from burning wood or any solid fuel as a source of heat.
The disclosure document is required within the boundaries of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which includes all of the following counties: Napa, Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin, and part of Solano and Sonoma counties. More than 1,500 rental housing professionals descended upon the Santa Clara Convention Center this spring for CAA Connect, California’s premier multifamily conference and expo.
The California Apartment Association’s April 5 event featured more than 175 booths with exhibitors covering a wide range of services, from roofing to landscaping to employment staffing.
The expo floor was teeming with activity as soon as the doors opened at 9 a.m.

Rebuffed at city halls in several Northern California cities, tenant advocates are increasingly turning to the November ballot in their push for strict rent control measures.
One week ago, tenant advocates in San Mateo began efforts to qualify a rent control-related ballot measure for the November 2016 election. This filing came just one day after the San Mateo City Council voted 3-2 against rent control and a just-cause eviction policy.

Over strong objections from the California Apartment Association, the Alameda City Council has given preliminary approval to a rent ordinance that includes binding arbitration to settle rent disputes.
Under Alameda’s ordinance, owners must justify rent increases over 5 percent through a mediation process. Should this process fail, rent disputes will be decided during binding arbitration, which is effectively a form of rent control.
With binding arbitration, the city — not the owner or free market — is placed in charge of how much rents can go up.

In a victory for the California Apartment Association, a pair of Northern California cities rejected rent control Monday night.
In Pacifica, the city scrapped rent control on a 2-3 vote before opting to instead pursue a more collaborative approach.
Instead of rent control, Pacifica will pursue an advisory program encouraging landlords to implement “best practices” that could include moderating rent increases and giving longer notice before raising rents. The council approved this approach on a 4-1 vote about 1 a.m.
