Tenant advocates in Long Beach have launched a campaign to place a rent control measure before voters next year.
On Wednesday morning, a representative from Housing Long Beach filed preliminary paperwork to qualify a rent control initiative for the November 2018 ballot.
The California Apartment Association has named Ben J. Benoit as its new vice president of public affairs in the Greater Inland Empire.
Benoit, who began Jan. 3, comes to CAA’s Greater Inland Empire office with a history of service to his community. Benoit has served as a council member for the city of Wildomar and has brought a strong voice to many regional boards.
The California Apartment Association has forged a strong working relationship with the next speaker of the state Assembly, Anthony Rendon, and looks forward to collaborating with him in his new leadership role.
Last week, Rendon won the speakership by a unanimous vote from his Assembly colleagues. He is set to take over the post in early March as current Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins is forced out by term limits.
Under new term limits rules, he is eligible to serve until 2024, which would make him one of the longest serving Assembly speakers.

Several California cities have regained a novel legal tool for ridding apartments of drug and gun offenders.
On Monday, Sept. 15, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a pair of bills, both supported by the California Apartment Association, that allow city prosecutors and city attorneys to file eviction lawsuits against certain types of criminal defendants in specified cities where a landlord requests assistance. SANTA CLARA — When it comes to picking apartments, it’s no surprise that tech-worker tenants want opportunities for social networking.

“They did not care about the fitness center; they did not care about a business center; they did not care about a swimming pool, Jacuzzi — none… Read More

The California Apartment Association is pleased to announce the hiring of government-affairs veteran Tommy Thompson as the South Coast Division’s new executive director.
Thompson, who joined CAA earlier this month, assumes responsibility for all CAA operations within the South Coast region, which includes Orange County and the cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill.
While Thompson’s duties are wide-reaching, he’ll mainly focus on advocating for the rental housing industry within the halls of local government.
No stranger to the nexus between public policy and business, Thompson’s most recent job included six years as director of government affairs for the Building… Read More

Years ago, the process for an uncontested eviction took about 30 days.
Now, that process takes about 45 days.
Unfortunately, the process is about to take much longer and initial estimates project a 60 day uncontested eviction.
I recently attended the Eviction Hub meeting in downtown Los Angeles given by the presiding judge.
The Los Angeles County announced sweeping cuts to counteract a $60 million to $80 million budget shortfall. We learned that very soon — in fact, possibly beginning late this month — L.A. County will downsize its eviction courts from 25 to a five-court trial-hub system.
Basically, it… Read More
