The California Apartment Association is mobilizing its members to fight yet another push for stricter rent control in San Jose.

A year after the city lowered its annual cap on rent increases from 8 percent to 5 percent, staff has recommended scrapping the percentage-based cap for a formula based on the rate of inflation. This is the type of formula used in San Francisco.

The city’s housing staff will discuss this proposal and other possible changes to the city’s rent control law, as well as its newly adopted “just cause” eviction ordinance, during a trio of community meetings this month.

  • The first meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, at Cypress Community Center, 403 Cypress Ave.
  • The second meeting is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, at City Hall Wing Rooms, 200 E. Santa Clara St.
  • The third meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Seven Trees Community Center, 3590 Cas Drive.
