The Sebastopol City Council on Tuesday will vote on a temporary rent control measure that would take effect immediately upon approval.
To pass, the Urgency Rent Moratorium Ordinance requires approval from four out of five council members.
The California Apartment Association urges its members in Sebastopol to voice their opposition to this draconian housing policy at the Nov. 1 meeting. See the agenda here.
It is critical that the City Council understand that:
- Rent control isn’t an affordable housing program; it will not build one new unit of housing nor will it bring rents down.
- Most renters in Sebastopol would not be subject to the rent moratorium – a rent moratorium would cover only a small number of units in Sebastopol.
- The rent moratorium will have an adverse impact on the vast majority of rental units by causing those rents to sky-rocket, just like in Oakland and San Francisco.
- The city of Sebastopol should be willing to partner with rental property owners on voluntary measures that keep rents stable. Landlords are willing to work with their residents and the city, if given a chance.
Send a letter to the mayor and council:
If you cannot attend the meeting, please send an e-mail to the Sebastopol City Council asking its members not to punish rental property owners to address the city’s housing issues. CAA encourages you to ask your business partners and colleagues to submit comments as well. A sample e-mail can be found below:
