The California Apartment Association next week will help address housing issues facing the Inland Empire. Tom Bannon, chief executive officer for CAA, will speak at “Housing the Future: The Inland Empire as Southern California’s Indispensable Geography.” Bannon is taking part as a member of the Industry Solutions Panel. The California Apartment Association is taking a close look at proposed revisions to Proposition 65 warning regulations. Released Jan. 16 by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, the revisions are intended to provide more information to consumers and other members of the public. While the current proposal is less onerous for the rental housing industry than the earlier version, significant issues remain, both with the proposed regulations and Proposition 65 in general. For our second highlights video from CAA’s legislative recap webinar, we review six bills that failed in 2014. Each of these bills would have affected the rental housing industry — especially two proposals that threatened the Ellis Act. This landmark state law, passed in the mid 1980s, protects a landlord’s right to leave the apartment business. While dead for now, some of these bills may resurface in 2015. The California Apartment Association is encouraging rental housing managers to participate in a survey to help fight bed bugs in multi-family housing. CAA is collaborating with the University of California on the study, which includes an electronic survey that takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. The California Apartment Association this weekend honored the Greater Fresno area's top rental housing professionals and properties during the 17th Annual Mark of Distinction Awards. On Saturday, Nov. 22, nearly 700 CAA members and industry partners brimmed with anticipation as they paraded into the Fresno Convention Center to find out who would receive the coveted MOD award.

Talk about a full plate. Besides great barbecue, the menu for CAA’s end-of-the-year membership luncheon in Pleasant Hill this month included a rundown on new laws, tips on saving energy, and philanthropy for local veterans. It was all served up Thursday, Nov. 13, at Back Forty Texas BBQ.
