California’s largest businesses, including
those in the rental housing industry, have just a few weeks to begin complying
with the nation’s most sweeping consumer-privacy law.
The California Consumer Privacy Act takes effect Jan. 1 and is intended to give consumers greater insights into data that companies collect about them — and more control over what happens to that data.
The law, which is being compared to the European Union’s privacy laws, mainly targets large companies — those with annual revenues of $25 million or more — as well as firms in the business of collecting and selling personal information.

The California Apartment Association has offered its support for a bill that would raise the state’s renter’s tax credit for the first time in decades.
“Housing costs are going through the roof in California, and families are struggling to pay the rent,” said state Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Contra Costa.
Glazer unveiled the bill Wednesday with two principal coauthors — Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, and Sharon Quirk-Silva, D-Orange County, as well as 28 coauthors.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday signed a bill that will streamline the approval of certain affordable housing projects with units for the homeless.
The California Apartment Association supported the bill, AB 2162 by Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco, and coauthored by Assemblyman Tom Daly, D-Anaheim. The legislation will expedite the approval of affordable housing developments with a certain percentage of “supportive housing.”
Supportive housing means housing with no limit on length of stay, that is occupied by persons with low incomes who have one or more disabilities, including mental illness, HIV or AIDS, substance abuse, or other chronic health condition.… Read More
The California Apartment Association has partnered with the Fresno-based nonprofit A Reading Heart to install mini-libraries in CAA-member properties.
A Reading Heart is a book-donation program dedicated to serving children in areas with limited access to books.
At 1 p.m. Monday, June 25, CAA and A Reading Heart will celebrate the opening of a mini-library at the Kings View Estates rental community at 2705 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Fresno.

Rental property owners and industry partners gathered last month for an annual CAA celebration that helps secure housing for Orange County families.
On May 24, more than 400 attendees gathered for the fifth annual CAA Orange County Charity Gala. The casino-themed event, held at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, provided an evening of good food and fun — all for a good cause.
The evening benefited Families Forward, which helps families achieve self-sufficiency through housing, food, counseling, career coaching, education, and other support services.

The California Apartment Association’s Orange County Division has been honored for its work with Families Forward to help end homelessness in the region.
The accolades came April 28 at the 2018 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards. CAA Orange County had been nominated for the award by Families Forward.
Matt Buck, vice president of public affairs for CAA Orange County, attended the ceremony.

A new CAA-supported program that teaches women property management skills and helps them find jobs and housing has graduated its inaugural class.
The REstart training program was initiated by the Institute of Real Estate Management in partnership with Women’s Empowerment, a local nonprofit that helps women and their children regain a home through job training and other support services. It is modeled after a similar program offered in San Diego.
