After hearing from CAA, the city of Anaheim’s Homeless Policy Working Group removed rent control as a possible solution to end homelessness.
During public comment Nov. 3, CAA addressed the Working Group about the ill-effects of rent control and the negative consequences that such a policy would bring.
Despite objections from the California Apartment Association, Los Angeles moved closer Wednesday to expanding its eviction controls to the city’s entire housing stock.
At present, Los Angeles’ just-cause eviction policies apply only to rental units that fall under the city’s rent control ordinance.
On Wednesday, however, the council’s Housing Committee directed city staff to examine expanding just-cause eviction policies to all rental housing in the city, regardless of size, type or year built. Staff has 60 days to return with a report on a possible ordinance.

Voters in Los Angeles on Tuesday soundly rejected Measure S, a ballot proposal that would have substantially blocked housing construction in the city for two years.
The California Apartment Association vigorously opposed Measure S, which threatened to exacerbate the housing shortage in Los Angeles, making it more difficult for renters to find places to live and further driving up rents.

Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian’s bedbug legislation, AB 551, has undergone a major overhaul after facing concerns by tenant groups that it may not be tough enough on property owners.
While the original version imposed protocols for bedbug eradication on landlords, tenants and pest control companies, the bill has been stripped of those provisions and now focuses on some basic duties.

CAA is requesting changes to an inclusionary-housing bill that’s up for a vote this week and would authorize local governments to require affordable housing in new rental developments.
