About 200 people received an economic and political forecast Wednesday from a premiere economist, several elected officials and representatives from the rental housing industry. They all came together for the California Apartment Association’s Outlook 2016, held at the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto. The event included a panel discussion with Rose Herrera, vice mayor of San Jose; Jeff Gee, a city councilman in Redwood City; and Mike Kasperzak, a city councilman in Mountain View. The California Apartment Association has published a form to help Mountain View landlords comply with the city’s upcoming “right to a lease” ordinance. The Mountain View City Council approved its new law Dec. 1, modeling it closely after a requirement in Palo Alto that rental owners offer residents the option of a 12-month lease. Mountain View officials believe that guaranteeing tenants the right to a fixed-term lease will provide stability for both renters and rental owners. The Mountain View City Council has approved what’s been called a “right to a lease” ordinance. Approved on a 6-1 vote Tuesday, the ordinance is modeled closely after a requirement in Palo Alto that rental owners offer residents the option of a 12-month lease. The Mountain View council believes that guaranteeing tenants the right to a fixed-term lease will provide stability for both renters and rental owners. The ordinance, which applies to rental properties with three units or more, requires that an owner/operator offer a 12-month lease, and if a tenant declines, that the owner get the rejection in writing.… Read More
