Fair housing proposals could force landlords to accept guarantors on behalf of tenants

The California Apartment Association last week submitted comments to the Fair Employment and Housing Council, which is considering a new round of fair housing regulations. The Fair Employment and Housing Council is part of the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). The council issues regulations to ensure that the state’s Fair Employment and Housing Act and other laws enforced by DFEH are interpreted and implemented fairly and protect the public to the full extent of the law.

Santa Rosa OKs Section 8 law, will work to make program more agreeable

The Santa Rosa City Council decided to pursue a mandatory Section 8 ordinance Tuesday, but not before pledging to work with CAA to make the program more workable for local landlords. The council advanced the ordinance on a 5-1 vote and is expected to formally approve the law after a second reading next month. The measure will prohibit blanket policies against accepting Section 8 applicants, ban “No Section 8” ads, and make it illegal to deny a tenancy based solely on the tenant’s possession of a voucher.
