An effort to place rent control before Santa Ana voters this November has entered the signature-gathering phase. The city attorney for Santa Ana recently gave petitioners the green light to begin circulating a petition for a measure titled the City of Santa Ana Rent Stabilization and Renters’ Rights Act. The California Apartment Association has expanded its Southern California government affairs team to bring greater representation to rental housing providers in South Los Angeles County. Earlier this month, CAA named Frederick Sutton as vice president of public affairs for Long Beach and more than 20 other municipalities in L.A. County. Rent increases limited to 10 percent while protections in effect With wildfires continuing to spread in Southern California, Gov. Jerry Brown has declared states of emergency in San Diego and Santa Barbara counties. The declarations on Thursday come just days after the fires prompted Brown to declare emergencies in the counties of Los Angeles and Ventura. There’s a growing effort underway to make California communities safer, as cities throughout the state adopt new laws requiring seismic retrofits of buildings proven to be vulnerable to damage in an earthquake. San Francisco, Berkeley and other Bay Area cities were among the first to mandate earthquake retrofits for wood-framed, soft-story buildings – structures with open parking on the ground floor and apartment units built on the stories above. Los Angeles sparked the trend in Southern California with the nation’s most sweeping seismic retrofit law, adopted in 2015.
