The California Apartment Association has published its Key Findings Report from the 2016 California Housing Forum, an event that brought together diverse thought leaders to help solve the state’s housing crisis.
“Inadequate housing stock threatens California’s economic prosperity and future,” said Tom Bannon, chief executive officer of the California Apartment Association, which organized the Housing Forum. “It is time to finally address the real causes of this crisis in a comprehensive and statewide manner.”

During the fourth quarter of last year, construction wrapped up on almost 42,000 apartment units across the nation — the highest figure in a decade, according to REIS Inc.
Also, apartments are making up roughly one-third of housing units under construction, a level unseen in four decades, according to this CNBC article, which cites US. Census data.

In a first for California, construction of multifamily housing units last year exceeded that of single-family homes.
Local jurisdictions reported 23,801 multifamily housing units built in 2012, compared with 20,883 for the single-family variety, according to a news release from the state Department of Finance.
The state grew last year by 0.8 percent, bringing California’s population to nearly 38 million.
Each of California’s 10 biggest cities saw a population bump, with San Jose growing at the fastest clip — 1.5 percent.
