More than six months of rent control is coming to an end in the city of Sebastopol. The city, which has capped annual rent increases at 3 percent since Nov. 1, will allow its rent moratorium to expire by the end of today, June 16.

Voters in Los Angeles on Tuesday soundly rejected Measure S, a ballot proposal that would have substantially blocked housing construction in the city for two years. The California Apartment Association vigorously opposed Measure S, which threatened to exacerbate the housing shortage in Los Angeles, making it more difficult for renters to find places to live and further driving up rents.

A court hearing originally scheduled for today on CAA’s challenge to Richmond’s rent control law has been delayed until next Wednesday. The hearing is now set for 9 a.m. Feb. 1. It was rescheduled due to a calendar conflict in Contra Costa County Superior Court.

In San Bernardino County, District 1 Supervisor Robert Lovingood, a pro-business candidate supported by CAA’s political action committee, became the first incumbent to be re-elected in 20 years. In Riverside County, voters decided to keep Chuck Washington as their District 3 supervisor. Washington had been appointed to the seat by Gov. Jerry Brown. CAA Greater Inland Empire supported Washington, who is keenly aware of the need for high-density housing in Riverside County. Despite strong support from the California Apartment Association, San Diego City Council candidate Ricardo Flores lost his bid for council Seat 9 in the Nov. 8 election. Flores, who recieved financial backing from CAA’s political action committee, garnered 47.5 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Georgette Gomez,  received  52.5 percent. During her campaign, Gomez said she would make addressing the city’s high cost of housing a priority.
