Tenant activists Thursday conceded that they’d fallen short in their effort to place rent control on Pasadena’s November ballot.
To qualify their measure, rent control advocates faced a May 30 deadline to submit at least 12,982 valid voter signatures. On Thursday, rent control supporters announced a final signature count of 10,224.
Supporters of the rent control measure, “The Pasadena Fair and Equitable Housing Charter Amendment,” filed their initial paperwork for the ballot measure in November. The initiative sought to bring rent control, “just cause” eviction policies and a rent board to the city.
Rent control activists in National City on Thursday submitted signatures in hopes of placing a rent control measure before voters this November.
Signatures filed at City Hall numbered more than 3,500, more than enough to qualify the initiative.
The petition must now undergo a signature count and verification process. If enough valid voter signatures were collected, the National City Rent Control and Community Stabilization Ordinance (accessible here) will be officially slated for November’s ballot.

An effort to place rent control before Santa Ana voters this November has entered the signature-gathering phase.
The city attorney for Santa Ana recently gave petitioners the green light to begin circulating a petition for a measure titled the City of Santa Ana Rent Stabilization and Renters’ Rights Act. The title and summary is accessible here.

Less than a year after voters rejected rent control in Santa Rosa, tenant activists are attempting to return the issue to the ballot box.

The CAA-led Californians for Responsible Housing has unveiled the “Stop the Housing Freeze” campaign and companion website NoHousingFreeze.org.

The California Apartment Association has formed a coalition of housing advocacy groups to defeat a draconian rent control and “just cause” eviction measure proposed for the city of Sacramento.
The coalition, Citizens for Affordable Housing, will raise dollars to educate voters on the serious flaws of the proposed Sacramento Renter Protection and Community Stabilization Charter Amendment. In addition, the coalition will work with local housing providers and the city of Sacramento on solutions to increase access to affordable housing for everyone in our community.

Tenant advocates have filed preliminary paperwork to place a rent control measure before voters in the city of Sacramento.
The initiative would amend the city charter to impose inflation-based rent control and “just cause” eviction policies in the capital city.
Under the measure, the rent charged as of Feb. 20, 2018, would serve as the base rent. Maximum annual increases would then be tied to the consumer price index. The measure would also create a nine-member rent control board, require landlords to pay an annual rental housing fee, and establish relocation assistance for displaced tenants.
An effort to place rent control and eviction controls before Long Beach voters will soon enter the signature-gathering phase.
