As Election Day quickly approached, about 30 rental housing professionals gathered for the inaugural Pints for PAC event Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Creek Monkey Tap House in Martinez. The evening included beer tasting, food pairing and exceptional networking. Pints for PAC attracted a wide range of attendees, from industry partners to reps from large property management companies to an independent rental owner with three units. When the city of Antioch needed help passing a half-cent sales tax last year, the California Apartment Association answered the call. As CAA members generously supported the city’s Measure C campaign, the Antioch City Council chose not to place a residential landlord business license tax on the same ballot. Thanks in part to the rental housing industry’s political support, the sales tax initiative sailed to victory in November, and Antioch began collecting additional revenue in April. Through the measure, Antioch expects to collect a little over $4 million. The City Council promised to spend the money fighting crime, hiring 22… Read More

A pair of CAA-supported San Diego City Council candidates earned victories in this week’s primary election. Lorie Zapf won the District 2 seat outright with 53.65 percent of the vote Tuesday. Chris Cate was the top vote-getter for District 6, earning 47.39 percent. Because he fell short of the 50 percent mark, Cate heads to a runoff election in November, where he’ll face second-place finisher Carol Kim, who garnered 31.05 percent of the vote. The California Apartment Association believes victories by Zapf and Cate will bolster Mayor Kevin Falconer’s pro-business vision for the city. Support for candidates like Zapf and… Read More

Bad public policy? In Los Angeles, we’re putting a cork in it. While lifting a few wineglasses, about 120 friends of the California Apartment Association helped CAA’s work to keep poor political candidates out of office and get good ones elected. It all came together April 30 at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica, where CAA’s Los Angeles  division held its inaugural “Cork & Sand” event. The political fundraiser brought in about $53,000, and all proceeds will benefit CAA LA’s Political Action Committee. The committee creates a positive business environment for the multi-family housing industry in Los Angeles by… Read More

Residents in west Contra Costa County will vote this spring on a parcel tax that could help rescue the financially beleaguered Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo. Registered voters will receive mail-in ballots sometime over the next two months and must return them by May 6th to be counted.  The required threshold is two-thirds vote.  The two-thirds is determined by the number of returned mail-in ballots. The tax, which would cost property owners $0.14 cents per square foot, would be permanent, even if the hospital merges with another medical facility or is purchased. All residents — including those in multifamily… Read More

Republican mayoral candidate Kevin Faulconer — supported by the California Apartment Association — sailed to victory earlier this month in a run-off election to lead San Diego. On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the 47-year-old former public relations executive won with 54 percent of the vote, compared with about 46 percent for Democratic opponent David Alvarez. Faulconer’s triumph follows the resignation last year of Bob Filner, which set the stage for a classic political battle between unions and the business community. The victory by Faulconer will make San Diego the largest city in the country run by a Republican mayor. Already, chatter… Read More

CAA-AAGIE’s political action committee provided financial support to Davis and co-hosted a reception Jan. 28 for members to meet the mayoral candidate. Moreover, CAA-AAGIE’s PAC supported incumbent City Councilman Fred Shorett, who won re-election to… Read More
