A CAA-supported program to help address substandard housing issues in Fresno is up and running with an online rental registry.
Beginning next week, the city of Fresno will mail letters to all rental properties within the city limits asking that they register their properties within 30 days. This can be done online at fresno.gov/rentalhousing or via a form included with the letter.
The registry is part of the Rental Housing Improvement Act, or RHIA. Mayor Lee Brand wrote the ordinance, taking into account the concerns of the California Apartment Association.

The California Apartment Association, the state’s leading trade group for the rental housing industry, has tapped Greg Terzakis as senior vice president of its newly created Central California region.
CAA’s Central California region covers a large swath of the Central Valley, from San Joaquin County to Tulare County.
The Fresno City Council on Thursday approved a CAA-supported ordinance to address substandard housing, a problem recently highlighted by local news media.
The ordinance incorporates a free rental registry and a percentage-based sample interior inspection program to ensure compliance with state housing law. Properties that pass inspection would then be allowed to self-certify.

It’s only natural for the people of Fresno to experience outrage over the conditions at Summerset Village apartments.
More than a thousand residents went for weeks without heat and hot water. A number of code violations exist, and apartment residents should never have to withstand Third World living conditions –especially in the largest city in California’s Central Valley.
The residents at Summerset Village endured hardships at no fault of their own, and the Fresno community, including responsible rental housing owners and managers, are embarrassed about the substandard conditions.
As our community examines what went wrong, let us… Read More

We at the California Apartment Association strongly encourage you to step forward and help these residents. At CAA Greater Fresno, we are contributing at least $2,000 toward this effort. Please join us.
