A bill that would authorize the California courts to cut rents by 25% won’t get a hearing until summer at the earliest.
AB 828 by Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, last week was placed in the Senate Rules Committee, which postpones any possibility of a hearing for several weeks.

Thanks to CAA, a recently signed law ensuring a tenant’s ability to pay rent through a third party also contains protections for landlords.
Historically, landlords have been unwilling to accept payments from third parties over concerns that a third party would claim a right to possession of the unit.
The California Apartment Association worked with the author, Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, to prevent this from happening.

A CAA-sponsored bill to speed up the approval process for housing has won approval from the Senate Appropriations Committee.
AB 2180 by Assemblyman Philip Ting, D-San Francisco, passed the committee on a 5-0 vote, with two abstentions.
The bill proposes to expedite the building permit process by shortening the number of days that a local government must take to approve a new housing project.
AB 2180 now goes to the Senate Floor where it will be voted on within the next several weeks.
It is one of four housing production bills sponsored by the California Apartment Association this year.
