Pacifica voters on Saturday received a thorough education on the flaws and consequences of the rent control proposal appearing on November’s ballot as Measure C. Measure C is modeled closely after rent control and eviction control ballot measures rejected by voters last year in San Mateo and Burlingame. Joshua Howard, senior vice president of the California Apartment Association, took part in Saturday’s panel discussion, as did Pacifica Vice Mayor John Keener and representatives of both No and Yes on Measure C campaigns. The breakfast-time discussion was hosted by the Pacifica-Daly City Democrats Club.

A number of the California Apartment Association’s corporate members received recognition last month for their work to help reduce homelessness in Orange County. The honors came Aug. 24 as Families Forward held its sixth Annual Housing Partner Appreciation event. Families Forward which helps families achieve self-sufficiency through housing, food, counseling, career coaching, education, and other support services.

Although they’re just beginning their summer recess, California lawmakers already have a clear priority for when they return to the Capitol on Aug. 21 — finishing work on hundreds of housing-related bills. Those bills include a trio of housing-production proposals sponsored by the California Apartment Association, which are included within the affordable housing bills being urged by Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers.

This year’s event, held at the DoubleTree, featured economist Jay Prag of Claremont Graduate University’s Drucker School of Management, and Michael Cobb, market analyst with CoStar Group.

Heading to the governor’s desk is a CAA-supported bill that would encourage housing development near public transit in the San Francisco Bay Area. The legislation, SB 680 by Sen. Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, won approval this week in the state Assembly.

A proposal to apply “just cause” eviction policies to non-rent-controlled housing in Los Angeles got a boost this week from the City Council. At present, just-cause eviction requirements apply only to the city’s rent-controlled housing. But under a proposal gaining traction in L.A., just-cause would apply to the city’s entire housing stock, regardless of whether rents are regulated.

Some novel approaches to tackling California’s housing crisis are continuing to gain traction in the state Legislature this year. Take AB 73 by Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco. This bill, supported by the California Apartment Association, would incentivize local governments to zone for more housing.
