More than 100 elected leaders from throughout California this week announced their opposition to Proposition 21, the extreme rent control measure going before California voters in the Nov. 3 statewide election.
The list of officials opposing radical rent control measure includes county supervisors, mayors, city council members, city clerks and board members.

The continued spread of wildfires in California has led to new declarations of emergency from Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Each of the emergency proclamations trigger protections against price gouging, including rent increases over 10%.

The latest emergency declarations came Sunday. Counties named in the declaration include Fresno, Madera and Mariposa counties, due to the Creek Fire; San Bernardino County, due to the El Dorado Fire; and San Diego County, due to the Valley Fire. The fires have burned tens of thousands of acres, destroyed homes and caused the evacuation of thousands of residents.

The city of Fresno will waive inspection fees for landlords when apartment checkups resume next month following a nearly six-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The City Council voted 7-0 Thursday to restart residential interior inspections using virtual technology. Inspections have been suspended since March to prevent the spread of coronavirus to both renters and city staff.

The city of Fresno next week will begin
levying harsher penalties against landlords who chronically violate city codes
at their rental properties.
The steeper fines, which go into effect Nov. 11, are reserved for property owners with more than 10 citations in one year — a distinction that will earn them the label of “serial violator.”
When landlords in Fresno County evict a tenant, they’ll now fill out paperwork intended to make the process safer.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday unveiled a revised “letter of instruction” for landlords to complete before authorities serve notices on tenants losing their homes.
Law enforcement officials discussed the form during an educational luncheon hosted by the California Apartment Association in Fresno and covered by CBS 47 TV.
“Not that we weren’t being as safe as we could before, but we saw where we could improve,” Deputy Doug Richardson told the station.
