Once again, the California Apartment Association has helped keep extreme forms of rent control out of the state. Thanks largely to a campaign led by CAA, voters in Tuesday’s election rejected Proposition 21, the statewide ballot measure that would have invited back the radical rent control policies that proliferated in the 1970s and ’80s. As of Wednesday morning, with 99% of precincts partially reporting, 59.8% of voters had rejected Prop 21, while 40.2% voted to approve the measure. “It’s heartening that voters across the state recognized that Prop 21 would have worsened California’s ongoing housing shortage and homelessness crisis,” said… Read More

Supporters of extreme rent control have released “misleading” TV commercials promoting Proposition 21, according to fact checks by news media organizations throughout California. Proponents of Prop 21 are attempting to bring back the radical forms of rent control that proliferated in California in the 1970s and ’80s. Their advertising, however, fails to accurately describe the measure or the chilling effect it would have on affordable housing production. KCRA-TV, Northern California’s largest station, called two ads supporting Prop 21 on TV ads “misleading.” Among its criticism: ads say that homelessness would be reduced yet there is no provision in Proposition 21… Read More

The list of California newspapers urging voters to reject radical rent control on the Nov. 3 ballot continues to grow. The Desert Sun, Chico Enterprise-Record, the Los Angeles Sentinel and La Opinión, are among the latest papers to editorialize against Proposition 21. “It’s almost identical to Proposition 10 on the November 2018 ballot,” the Chico Enterprise-Record notes. “That lost 59 percent to 41 percent, and there really should be a law against running out the same idea over and over. Rent control doesn’t increase affordable housing. It may protect those who already have rental homes, but it’s a disincentive to… Read More

Fresno Mayor Lee Brand, along with community groups across the Central Valley, have joined the opposition to Proposition 21, the extreme rent control measure going before California voters on Nov. 3 ballot. Fresno Mayor Lee Brand “Prop 21 is the same bad idea the voters rejected in 2018,” Brand said. “It would give unelected rent boards unlimited power to create housing fees that would cripple the industry. Not only would increased fees hurt renters whose pocketbooks have already been hit because of COVID-19, mom and pop landlords who can’t pay their mortgages due to the pandemic would never recover.” Other… Read More

Screenshot of actor Troy Dillinger portraying an Army veteran in a Yes on 21 ad. Actual veterans, who are largely opposed to Prop 21, say the ad is misleading and violates the Stolen Valor Act. Early in the election season, more than a dozen veteran groups came out against Proposition 21, the extreme rent control measure going before California voters this fall. So, it raised some eyebrows — and tempers — when the Yes on 21 campaign began running an ad depicting a highly decorated military man promoting a proposition that veterans clearly don’t want. What’s more, the man in… Read More
