Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order on evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic will remain in place at least into early fall.
Last week, Newsom extended the order through Sept. 30. It had been set to expire July 28.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday extended an executive order from March 16 that cleared the way for local governments to enact COVID-19 related eviction moratoria.
The order had been set to expire Sunday but will now remain in effect through July 28.
Most locally approved eviction moratoria were set to expire this weekend in line with Newsom’s March executive order. With that order now renewed, local eviction moratoria that were tied to the order also will remain in place.

The continued spread of the coronavirus, including California’s first death from the outbreak, prompted Gov. Gavin Newsom this week to declare a statewide emergency.
“The state of California is deploying every level of government to help identify cases and slow the spread of this coronavirus,” Newsom said in this news release Wednesday. “This emergency proclamation will help the state further prepare our communities and our health care system in the event it spreads more broadly.”

During his inaugural state of the state address, Gov. Gavin Newsom this week called on lawmakers to craft legislation that stabilizes rental prices without ruining the businesses of small landlords.
“The pressures on vulnerable renters didn’t go away after the election,” Newsom said Tuesday. “We need new rules to stabilize neighborhoods and prevent evictions, without putting small landlords out of business.
