Selling rental properties in California will take significantly longer if a bill introduced this month becomes law.

A bill strongly opposed by CAA that would create a statewide rental registry has been amended to target landlords who’ve received government assistance in response to the coronavirus.
AB 2406 by Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, D-Oakland, would now require landlords to submit a long list of information about their buildings and their tenants to the state if they own five or more rental units — and accept rental assistance payments from federal or state COVID-19 programs.

California tax collectors are expected to waive penalties against landlords and other property owners unable to pay their taxes by Friday’s deadline due to COVID-19 financial hardships.
That announcement came Sunday from the California State Association of Counties and the California Association of County Treasurers and Tax Collectors. In a statement, the groups said that counties will, on a case-by-case basis, cancel penalties and other charges for homeowners, small businesses, and other property owners that are unable to pay their property taxes due to circumstances caused by the pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development this week urged owners of multifamily housing to share information about coronavirus with residents and employees.

“While the risk of infections for Americans remains low, we are encouraging multifamily owners and agents, and public housing authorities, to make the information below available to residents,” C. Lamar Seats, deputy assistant secretary for multifamily at HUD, says in this letter. “We further encourage multifamily owners, agents, performance-based contract administrators, FHA lenders, and all stakeholders to make this same information available to their employees.”

That figure represents this year’s maximum
applicant-screening charge. Each December, the state of California adjusts its
cap on applicant-screening fees based on changes to the Consumer Price Index.

As expected, Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, D-Oakland, is trying
again to create a statewide rental registry.
On Tuesday, Wicks introduced AB 2406, which would create a rental registry for all California
landlords with more than five units.
Last year, the California Apartment Association helped kill a similar bill, AB 724, which had an initial price tag north of $20 million and negative privacy implications for both landlords and tenants.
