Bill would let governments seize vacant rentals

March 2, 2020

A newly introduced bill would allow local governments to seize corporate-owned properties that sit vacant for 90 days or more. SB 1079 by Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, would authorize the use of eminent domain to acquire the unoccupied housing. It also would allow cities and counties to levy fines against the owner.

Key housing-supply bill, SB 50, dies on Senate floor

Senate Bill 50, this year’s most significant legislative attempt to address California’s housing shortage, died last week on the Senate floor. The proposal by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, failed to garner the 21 votes needed to move from the Senate floor to the Assembly by Friday’s deadline.

Bills seek affordable housing for college students

April 4, 2018

A pair of bills have emerged in the Legislature this year to help California college students secure housing near campus without breaking their budgets. SB 922 by Sen. Janet Nguyen, R-Garden Grove, focuses on turning surplus property near college campuses into housing for college students. It would authorize the California Department of General Services to offer unused properties within two miles of any University of California, California State University or California community college to local governments or nonprofits for the construction of such housing.

I recently needed to take a few hours of classes to complete my Recertification as a CAA California Certified Residential Manager.
