The San Diego Union-Tribune has joined major newspapers from across California in opposing Proposition 21, the radical rent control measure going before voters Nov. 3.
“Rent control is the wrong way to help Californians struggling with housing,” says the editorial, titled No on Prop. 21: Expanding rent control will make California housing crisis worse. “Lawmakers who are juggling a lot during this pandemic need to not lose sight of that. The long-term solution is listening to experts and building new houses.”
At this point, almost every major California newspaper has editorialized against Proposition 21.
Like its predecessor Prop 10, Prop… Read More
California’s McClatchy newspapers — including the Sacramento, Fresno and Modesto Bees — today joined a chorus of other news outlets urging voters to reject Proposition 21, the radical rent control measure on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Earlier this week, the Bakersfield Californian also editorialized against the measure.
Financed by Michael Weinstein and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Prop 21 threatens to bring back the extreme forms of rent control that proliferated in the 1970s.
“… under the rent control being proposed, the incentive to build market-rate units could disappear. That, in turn, could lead builders to avoid such projects, worsening the… Read More
Tenant activists have again failed to collect enough signatures to place a rent control measure before voters in the city of Santa Ana.
On Monday, Tenants United Santa Ana turned in 2,400 signatures at City Hall — far shy of the 10,909 valid voter signatures required to qualify the initiative for the Nov. 3 ballot.
Rent control proponents blamed the failure on the coronavirus, saying it prevented petitioners from going door-to-door, the Orange County Register reported.
“Time and time again, it’s abundantly clear that voters do not believe rent control will solve the housing shortage,” said Victor Cao, CAA’s vice… Read More
It’s against federal law to hold a Section 8 voucher-holder accountable for a local housing authority’s failure to pay the rent. This means that a property owner cannot require a Section 8 tenant to pay the housing authority’s portion of the rent or evict a tenant because the housing authority’s payments are delayed.
The California Apartment Association wants to ensure that its members understand this regulation, as the partial federal government shutdown has dragged into its fourth week.
At present, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has enough money for Section 8 payments in February, but the same… Read More
Tenant activists in Glendale this week turned in less than half of the signatures required to place a rent control measure before city voters, prompting the city clerk to reject the initiative.
Rent control proponents on Monday submitted 3,988 signatures but needed 10,529 to trigger the signature-verification stage for the proposed ballot measure.
“The CA Elections Code requires a specific number of minimum signatures for us to move ahead to the next steps of this process,” Ardy Kassakhian, the city clerk, said in a news release. “The initiators of this effort did not meet that threshold, and therefore this specific… Read More

An effort to recall three allies of the rental housing industry from the Lake Forest City Council has failed.
The California Apartment Association, in a variety of ways, helped Mayor Andrew Hamilton, Mayor Pro Tem Scott Voigts and Councilman Dwight Robinson stave off a campaign to cut short their terms.
Hamilton, Voigts, and Robinson make up a housing-friendly majority of the council.
“If we lost them to a recall, we would have seen new housing projects denied at a rapid pace. Lake Forest needs more housing, including apartments, to keep up with demand,” said Tommy Thompson, executive director of CAA… Read More

Renting out properties as vacation homes can make plenty of money for owners.
An article by the Orange County Register tells the lucrative tale of real estate broker Barbara O’Hara Hamilton.
Hamilton rents out a duplex in the Newport Beach area on a weekly basis, the article says, and can rake in nearly $7,000 monthly — roughly four times the monthly income when the unit rented annually.
The article also offers tips on preparing a unit for vacation rental, from getting the proper license to stocking the shelves.
