The Lafayette City Council on Monday is expected to consider a number of bad policies for the multifamily housing industry, including rent control.
The council also is likely to consider a moratorium on rent increases — and perhaps a just-cause for eviction measure, which would make it difficult to evict problem tenants, including those endangering other residents.

The California Apartment Association is working to defeat a November ballot measure that would levy unfair and exorbitant taxes that hurt both landlords and renters in Antioch.
CAA’s campaign, dubbed “No on Measure O,” includes a coalition of seniors, homeowners and local business owners.
However, this tax would not resolve the city’s chronic deficits — and is likely to be used for nothing more than City Hall salaries. Because Measure O was presented as a general tax, the City Council does not have to specify where or how the additional tax revenues will be spent.

A workshop on defeating bedbugs this week left only a few empty seats at the Concord City Council Chambers.
The California Apartment Association and city of Concord designed the event, Monday, Nov. 18, with apartment owners, managers and tenants in mind, particularly with recently reported bedbug infestations in several apartment complexes along the Monument Corridor.

Walnut Creek has added resources to its website to help landlords and others comply with an ordinance that bans smoking through much of the community, the city manager’s office told CAA on Friday, Oct. 18.
A new webpage includes sign templates, the California Apartment Association’s lease addendum information, a compliance fact sheet and ordinance summary.
Moreover, the materials include contact information for the city’s No Smoking Hotline and e-mail address.
