Supporters of extreme rent control have released “misleading” TV commercials promoting Proposition 21, according to fact checks by news media organizations throughout California. Proponents of Prop 21 are attempting to bring back the radical forms of rent control that proliferated in California in the 1970s and ’80s. Their advertising, however, fails to accurately describe the measure or the chilling effect it would have on affordable housing production. The CAA-led campaign to defeat Proposition 21 has released its second TV commercial aimed at keeping extreme forms of rent control out of California. The 30-second ad from Californians for Responsible Housing features Col. Lou Carmona of Rancho Murieta, a retired U.S. Army pilot who served 32 years in the Army before retiring as a colonel in 2018. Carmona deployed to Bosnia in the late 1990s and did three tours in Iraq/Afghanistan/Kuwait. During an interview this week about rising rents in San Diego, Whitney Benzian of CAA pointed to a lack of housing supply.
