The Santa Barbara City Council on Tuesday decided against pursuing a rent control policy, opting instead to examine alternative approaches to the city’s housing shortage.
Santa Barbara will now take a closer look at policies including enhanced mediation and rental inspections. The council also wants a task force to study a potential just-cause eviction ordinance, however, council members expressed reservations about the policy.
Voters in Los Angeles on Tuesday soundly rejected Measure S, a ballot proposal that would have substantially blocked housing construction in the city for two years.
The California Apartment Association vigorously opposed Measure S, which threatened to exacerbate the housing shortage in Los Angeles, making it more difficult for renters to find places to live and further driving up rents.

Ask landlords to provide information on rent increases to prospective tenants
Contract with an outside company for yearly analysis of market conditions on rental properties in West Hollywood.
City staff will now draft the alternative ordinance. Stay tuned for updates at caanet.org.
