Improvisational humorist and professional speaker Joel Zeff doesn’t waste any time getting his audience into the act. During its annual breakfast meeting, the California Apartment Association’s Orange County division greeted the holiday season, took in a speech from a state senator and recognized several members who’ve gone above and beyond expectations. In a presentation dubbed “Shaking up Sacramento,” state Sen. John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa, pointed to problems with the state’s finances, including California having the nation’s highest unfunded pension obligations, starting with at least $140 billion. Greater Fresno’s rental housing elite received accolades Saturday night during the 18th annual Mark of Distinction Awards Banquet. The California Apartment Association event drew roughly 800 members to the Fresno Convention Center in downtown. Serving as master of ceremonies during the elegant evening was local CAA board member and attorney Steven R. Hrdlicka. Awards went to winners in 19 categories.
