CAA Orange County held its annual gala this month, giving rental property professionals and industry partners an opportunity to mingle, break bread and network — all for a good cause.
More than 450 people attended the gala, held April 14 at the Hilton Orange County. The event raised $25,000 for the local United Way’s Rapid-Rehousing initiative. Rapid Rehousing helps families with children move into affordable housing, minimizing the time they spend in shelters, in cars or on the street.

Improvisational humorist and professional speaker Joel Zeff doesn’t waste any time getting his audience into the act.
Near the start of a recent 90-minute presentation, Zeff asked the roughly 200 rental housing professionals in the room to utter something rarely if ever heard in the leasing office.
“Bunny, bunny, bunny.”
As they did, raucous laughter began, as did one of Zeff’s key lessons.
“Look around. Everybody’s got a smile on their face — even the grumpy people. That’s the spirit of the bunny, bunny, bunny,” he said. “Because everybody looked foolish, and they did it together, it wasn’t a big… Read More

During its annual breakfast meeting, the California Apartment Association’s Orange County division greeted the holiday season, took in a speech from a state senator and recognized several members who’ve gone above and beyond expectations.
In a presentation dubbed “Shaking up Sacramento,” state Sen. John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa, pointed to problems with the state’s finances, including California having the nation’s highest unfunded pension obligations, starting with at least $140 billion.
Moorlach, who represents the state’s 37th Senate District, addressed about 200 attendees Friday, Dec. 5, at the Radisson Hotel Newport Beach. He is a familiar face in Orange County, where he… Read More

Huntington Beach officials on Monday rejected a moratorium on apartment development along an important stretch of the city.
The City Council voted 4-2, with one abstention, against halting apartment construction in the Beach-Edinger Corridor Specific Plan.
The council, however, directed staff to reduce the number of units that can be developed along the Beach Boulevard and Edinger Avenue corridors.
“This is a reasonable direction considering the alternative,” said Tommy Thompson, executive director of the California Apartment Association’s Orange County Division. “This vote came after a successful advocacy effort on the part of CAA and our coalition partners.”
