Twice this summer, the California Apartment Association’s Inland Empire Division helped low-income renters who’d fallen on particularly hard times, including both fire victims and families facing eviction. To recognize the efforts, San Bernardino County’s housing authority passed a resolution Tuesday thanking CAA-Apartment Association of the Greater Inland Empire. The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors commended CAA Tri-County on Tuesday, Nov. 5,  for helping victims of two fires in Redwood City. Tri-County worked with the city to find housing for displaced residents in the blazes. After one of the blazes, at the Hallmark House in July, CAA member Equity Residential responded by offering nearly two-dozen housing units for tenants at an apartment community in East Palo Alto. San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum and all other members of the county board presented commendations to CAA Tri-County and other organizations including that provided assistance.

CAA Fresno’s 2013 Mark of Distinction Awards will do more than honor peers in the multifamily housing business. It will give back to the community. At the 16th annual event, HD Supply Multifamily Solutions will donate $2,500 to the Central Valley Veterans organization, which helps local veterans with everything from housing to employment to education. Once again, the California Apartment Association has taken a successful swing at homelessness. CAA Tri-County’s 24th Annual Charity Golf Tournament raised money through sponsorship, golf foursomes and raffles. The generosity paid off during the Housing Industry Foundation’s September Summit gala in Burlingame. Anna Kramer, chairwoman for CAA Tri-County, presented a donation of $57,000 – among the highest amounts since the tournament was organized in 1990. “I’m sure everyone in the rental industry would agree with me that the last several years have been good for our industry,” Kramer said. “We’ve seen strong markets, solid growth and healthy transactions. Following a fire last month in Redwood City, Equity Residential worked with housing officials to make roughly two dozen rental units available to those displaced by the blaze. After receiving roughly three truck loads worth of donations, the California Apartment Association has wrapped up its collection drive for victims of an arson fire Aug. 18 in San Bernardino. During the two-week donation drive, the AAGIE office collected an assortment of clothes, toys, food, furniture, gift cards and more. The items are helping four women and 13 children who lost everything. The fire started in an unoccupied duplex before expanding to a pair of apartment buildings. Authorities arrested 30-year-old transient Allen Simms in connection with the blaze, the San Bernadino County Sun reported. The July 30 fire destroyed 18 units and displaced 40 residents, according to this article in the Fresno Bee.
