The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted 5-0 to extend its eviction moratorium measures through February. The L.A. County action includes anticipation of the possible expiration of AB 3088, which provides statewide eviction protections and rent deferral guidelines for COVID-19 affected renters.

Sacramento landlords and tenants affected by COVID-19 have until the end of this month to sign up for free city-funded mediation services. The program, run through Sacramento Mediation Center, is slated to end Dec. 30. Anyone who opens a case after the free program expires will be charged based on a sliding scale tied to household or business income. Anyone interested in participating is urged to contact the Sacramento Mediation Center at (916) 850-9010 or sacramento@calawyersforthearts.org. The California Apartment Association is calling on Congress to include COVID-19 rental assistance in its next federal relief package. CAA on Dec. 11 urged its members to echo that request in emails to their representatives in the nation’s capital. “As the debate over a new COVID-19 relief package proceeds, it’s critical that Congress provide short-term financial assistance for renters,” CAA’s message to Congress says. “This assistance would help them come current on the rent they’ve had to defer and help spare them an avalanche of rent debt in the coming months.” Rep. California lawmakers introduced a pair of bills that would keep COVID-19 eviction protections in place well into 2021 and perhaps longer. News of the bills came Monday, Dec. 7, the first day of the new legislative session and less than two months before eviction protections are set to expire. San Mateo County’s public transportation system is gauging landlord interest in its bulk transit pass program. SamTrans’ Way2Go program allows residential complexes and companies to purchase annual unlimited-ride bus passes for all eligible residents or employees. The study seeks to improve the bulk transit pass program and make it more appealing to apartment owners and managers and other potential participants. The California Apartment Association is working to protect ethical landlords from being unfairly punished under separate “anti-harassment” ordinances moving forward in Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Los Angeles proposal aims to prevent landlords from taking a variety of steps considered by the city to be harassment, such as threatening to report a tenant to immigration authorities, refusing to accept lawful rent payments from a tenant, or retaliating against a renter for participating in a tenants union.
