The California Apartment Association is preparing to launch a revamped website with improved navigation and search tools, faster load times and a more modern look.
CAA plans to roll out its redesigned site in the first quarter of 2021. The association will keep members apprised of the new site launch plans and offer previews of the exciting changes to come.
Revisions to the website will have no impact on member login information or any data they have stored in their accounts.
CAA launched its current website in March of 2015. Since that time, visits have grown dramatically.
In March 2014,… Read More

The California Apartment Association has defeated an initiative in Tuesday’s election that would have imposed rent control and just-cause eviction policies in Burbank.
As of Wednesday morning, Burbank voters had rejected Measure RC with 63.5% of the vote.
By stopping Measure RC, CAA has protected Burbank’s rental housing industry from a severe form of rent control tied to inflation on pre-1995 multifamily housing.
Among other things, Measure RC threatened to:
Roll rents back to September 2019 levels.
Limit increases to CPI with a 1% floor and 4% ceiling.
Impose strict eviction controls.
Establish a rent commission to oversee the rental… Read More

After facing aggressive opposition from the California Apartment Association, a draconian initiative to impose rent control and just-cause eviction policies in Sacramento has failed passage.
In Tuesday’s election, 61.8% of voters rejected the initiative, Measure C.
By defeating Measure C, CAA has protected Sacramento’s rental housing industry from San Francisco-style rent control and just-cause eviction protections.
Among other things, Measure C threatened to:
Roll rents back to February 2018 levels.
Limit increases to CPI with a 2% floor and 5% ceiling.
Impose strict eviction controls and relocation assistance for no-fault evictions.
Establish an elected rent board to oversee the rental… Read More
Once again, the California Apartment Association has helped keep extreme forms of rent control out of the state.
Thanks largely to a campaign led by CAA, voters in Tuesday’s election rejected Proposition 21, the statewide ballot measure that would have invited back the radical rent control policies that proliferated in the 1970s and ’80s.
As of Wednesday morning, with 99% of precincts partially reporting, 59.8% of voters had rejected Prop 21, while 40.2% voted to approve the measure.
“It’s heartening that voters across the state recognized that Prop 21 would have worsened California’s ongoing housing shortage and homelessness crisis,” said… Read More

The apartment and rental home business faces an existential threat with Proposition 21, a statewide rent control measure that threatens to dismantle California’s most important landlord-protection law. At the same time, strict rent control measures are going before voters in the cities of Sacramento and Burbank.

Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, economist Peter Linneman this week explained why single-family home sales have performed better than he’d expected and some reasons he’s bullish on multifamily.
Linneman offered an economic analysis and some predictions during Wednesday’s Walker Webcast: Magic 8 Ball for the Markets, hosted by Willy Walker, chief executive officer and president of Walker & Dunlop.
Linneman previously predicted that the COVID-19 pandemic would torpedo home sales, and while sales indeed dropped in April and May, it wasn’t the collapse that the economist initially anticipated.
He said his earlier assessment missed the phenomenon of “involuntary… Read More

The list of California newspapers urging voters to reject radical rent control on the Nov. 3 ballot continues to grow.
The Desert Sun, Chico Enterprise-Record, the Los Angeles Sentinel and La Opinión, are among the latest papers to editorialize against Proposition 21.
“It’s almost identical to Proposition 10 on the November 2018 ballot,” the Chico Enterprise-Record notes. “That lost 59 percent to 41 percent, and there really should be a law against running out the same idea over and over. Rent control doesn’t increase affordable housing. It may protect those who already have rental homes, but it’s a disincentive to… Read More

Costa Mesa has become the latest city in Orange County to launch a rental assistance program to help tenants affected by COVID-19.
The California Apartment Association helped the city of Costa Mesa with the effort, which won City Council approval on Oct. 6.
“I commend Mayor Katrina Foley, Costa Mesa City Council, and Assistant City Manager Susan Price for putting this program together,” said Victor Cao, local vice president of public affairs for CAA. “This is much-needed relief for both tenants and independent rental owners.”
In addition to its work in Costa Mesa, CAA has partnered with Anaheim, Irvine and… Read More

More than 100 elected leaders from throughout California this week announced their opposition to Proposition 21, the extreme rent control measure going before California voters in the Nov. 3 statewide election.
The list of officials opposing radical rent control measure includes county supervisors, mayors, city council members, city clerks and board members.
According to the Legislative Analyst’s Office, Prop 21 could result in a decline in property values which in turn would result in the potential loss of tax revenue. Prop 21 also could result in “tens of millions of dollars per year” in increased costs to local government. Like… Read More
