The California Apartment Association has asked Bay Area health officers to adopt a uniform set of guidelines for the opening of pools, gyms, and other amenities at apartment communities. In a letter to area health officers, CAA points out that recently published guidelines for reopening swimming pools have differed from county to county, which can lead to confusion when rolling out reopening rules at the rental property. This is especially true of companies that manage properties in multiple jurisdictions.

In California, many air districts fail to meet federal health standards for fine particulate matter, of which wood smoke is a significant source. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, changing out one old, dirty, inefficient wood stove removes as much pollution as removing five old diesel buses from the road. This year, SB 563 by Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, proposes to establish the Wood Smoke Reduction Program, which would include funding to replace old, wood stoves. The California Air Resources Board would administer the program in coordination with local air districts.

After addressing CAA’s concerns, the cities of San Bruno and South San Francisco have approved ordinances prohibiting smoking inside multifamily units and common areas. On Nov. 9, the South San Francisco City Council approved the second reading of its ordinance after adopting clarifications and other requests from the California Apartment Association, Tri-County Division. Those revisions include the following, which provide clarity and minimize impacts to property owners and operators: Phase-in period of up to 12 months Ability for owners to create designated smoking areas No requirements of installing customized signage inside apartment units

Rental agreements for properties with wood-burning heaters or fireplaces throughout the San Francisco Bay Area must include a document describing the health hazards from burning wood or any solid fuel as a source of heat.  The disclosure document is required within the boundaries of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which includes all of the following counties: Napa, Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin, and part  of Solano and Sonoma counties.  Exact boundaries can be found here.

More than 250 golfers and guests gathered Monday in San Mateo for a California Apartment Association event that raises thousands of dollars annually to battle homelessness in the Silicon Valley. The CAA Tri-County Charity Golf Tournament generates money for the Housing Industry Foundation, a nonprofit that helps individuals and families in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties remain in or return to stable housing.
